How do you weigh accountability against self-compassion?
Ok, so, you messed up. And now you feel like crap. You’re stuck reliving your mistakes, weighed down by regret, guilt and shame, struggling to move on. Whether it’s returning to a sin, hurting someone you love, destroying a relationship, or just doing something ‘stupid’, the answer is not self-punishment.
Justice vs Mercy
In Surah Qalam, we learn that despair is not an option. This chapter is rich with so many beautiful lessons. But let’s focus for a moment on the story of some people who make a big mistake. They become greedy and ungrateful, and so God suddenly destroys their source of wealth. After blaming each other, and then themselves, they turn to God and say something quite fascinating:
“We hope that our Lord will give us in exchange better than it. Truly, we turn to our Lord with hope.” Qur’an – 68:32
Even though they knew they had messed up they still said, God please not only replace what you took from us but give us even better than before. Wow.
Notice how the emphasis shifts entirely away from the evil intentions/actions that landed them in disaster, and onto Allah’s beautiful and generous qualities. The tone shifts from despair to optimism in a heartbeat.
At first glance this plea might feel counter-intuitive. Our first reaction might be, ‘who do you think you are to ask? Don’t you know you deserved your punishment?’ But that would miss the point. The point is not who they are, or who we are, but who Allah is. If your Lord sees true repentance in your heart, why expect the worst?
“But Allah would not punish them while… they seek forgiveness.” Qur’an – 8:33
Make yourself ready for that second chance
Sometimes, the only thing you have control over is your attitude. In all the darkness are you willing to focus on the light?
What if the sin/error that broke you was in fact the opportunity you didn’t know you needed?
When you mess up, focus on what you learnt. That’s your mission. Then figure out how you will apply that lesson to whatever comes next. Because Allah didn’t set up for punishment and humiliation, but for growth and success. This is good news: you didn’t miss your chance.
Mistakes unlock blessings
“And O my people! Seek your Lord’s forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance. He will shower you with rain in abundance, and add strength to your strength. So do not turn away, persisting in wickedness.” Quran – 11: 52
People with faith in Allah’s mercy hold themselves accountable, but they don’t hold themselves hostage. Regret, guilt and self-blame are, in essence, your soul’s plea for mercy. And God, the Most Merciful, is listening.
If you have a grateful heart, it’s not possible to gain more life experience and for your life to not improve. The past is gone. But with humility, the beauty of the lesson stays with you, taking you one step deeper into Allah’s mercy.
Your future is brighter because of your mistakes and your willingness for them to become a means for bringing you closer to your Lord.
“What comes after will be better than what went before. And your Lord will give you so much you will be satisfied.” Qur’an – 93:4-5
No matter how bad you messed up, you’re still allowed to pray for a miracle.
